"Vinny is coming off a year in which he threw 25 interceptions, but the switch to a West Coast-style of offense should eliminate many of those mistakes. I think Vinny will be back and better than ever as soon as he figures out the new system."

The New York Jets were hoping rookie wide receiver Santana Moss would bring an immediate impact to a below-average receiving corp and an anemic punt return game, but now they will be without his services for about 12 weeks while he recovers from knee surgery. This is a tough setback for new head coach Herman Edwards and first-year general manager Terry Bradway, who were counting on Moss to handle the punt-return duties.

The Jets brought in free agent Matthew Hatchette, and they are hoping he will emerge as a top receiver to line up with Wayne Chrebet this year. Kevin Swayne, who spent time with the XFL and Arena League, has been a pleasant surprise and figures to fill the role Moss was projected to play.

New York is switching to a West Coast-oriented offense and quarterback Vinny Testeverde has looked very comfortable during off-season workouts. The short passing game should help him cut back on the 25 interceptions he threw last season. Chad Pennington will be the backup, taking the place of Ray Lucas who signed with Miami.

Curtis Martin will once again shoulder the load at running back, but rookie LaMont Jordan will take over the backup duties. The 5-foot-10, 230 pound back out of Maryland was the Jets' second-round pick in this year's NFL draft, and their plan is to use Jordan to rest Martin more this season to keep him from wearing down as he has done in the past. Jordan will also be a nice change-of-pace off the bench for the Jets.

With the injury to Moss, cornerback Aaron Glenn becomes the top punt returner. The Jets may be trying to make a deal for help at the position, and the Bears' Glyn Milburn or the Raiders' Darrien Gordon may be on their wish list.

On defense, the Jets are switching from a 3-4 to a 4-3 defense with linebacker John Abraham moving to defensive end. The Jets are expecting big things from Abraham, who was off to a fantastic start in his rookie season, registering 4½ sacks in just six games, before his season was cut short by injury.

Linebacker Brian Cox was released, but Marvin Jones came into camp in excellent condition and Mo Lewis is getting more reps in passing situations. The secondary is very solid, and the addition of free safety Damien Robinson gives the Jets another hard-hitter with a nose for the football.

Overview

As Vinny goes, so go the Jets. And the new West Coast offense will do wonders for Vinny. His confidence in this offense should grow as the season passes and it will show on the scoreboard. They could still use a big playmaker at wide receiver, and maybe Moss will provide that explosiveness when he returns.

The defensive line is suspect, especially if Jason Ferguson is lost for the season. If they manage to stay healthy and productive, this could be a good defensive unit. Overall I think the Jets have a shot at double-digit wins and a shot at second place in the division.
