New York Giants
The New York Giants are another team whose fortunes are riding on how much production they get from the quarterback position. Kerry Collins took over the starting job last year and showed flashes of potential late in the season, but if the Giants are going to challenge in the east this year they are going to have to get consistent play from the position. Kent Graham, who was the opening day starter last season, has moved on and New York has replaced him on the roster with long-time Cowboy's back up Jason Garrett. One of the week spots on the Giants' roster last season was the running back position. New York feels as though they have solved that problem for years to come by using their first round draft choice on Heisman Trophy winner Ron Dayne. Dayne, the NCAA's all-time leading rusher brings a combination of quick feet and a big load that many say is very similar to that of the legendary Earl Campbell of the Houston Oilers.
At wide receiver, the Giants have there most potent combination ever in Amani Toomer and Ike Hilliard. The two combined last season for 151 receptions for 2,179 yards. Collins also has a big target in tight end Pete Mitchell who hauled in 58 catches last year.
The Giants looked to improve their offensive line by picking up Dusty Ziegler from Buffalo and Lomas Brown from the Cleveland during the off season. Brown, a seven-time Pro Bowler, missed the final six games last season due to a knee injury.
The key on the defensive side of the ball will be on the defensive line. The Giants line was highly touted going into the 1999 season, but seemed to underachieve all season. A lack of pressure on opposing quarterbacks last season allowed the Giants' secondary to be picked apart. Left end Michael Strahan needs to get back to double digits in sacks this season and the rest of the line needs to step it up a notch to take the constant double teams away from Strahan.
The linebacking corps of the Giants should be among the best in the league with the addition of Michael Barrow to go along with hard-hitter Jesse Armstead and Corey Widmar. The secondary will need Jason Sehorn to return to form this season, especially with the departures of free safety Percy Ellsworth and reserve cornerback Jeremy Lincoln.
