| Bucs Have All the Pieces in Place | |
Dateline: August 31, 2001

Quarterback Brad Johnson is a proven winner, and is expected to bring leadership and a spark to an offense that was less than spectacular last year. The former Pro Bowler will be asked to open up the passing attack and give this team a dimension it hasn't had in several years.
Don't look for the Bucs to completely abandon the running game, in fact, they will continue to rely heavily on it. And who can blame them? They have two former Pro Bowl running backs on the roster. Warrick Dunn will be the feature back after proving he could handle the job last season, and fullback Mike Alstott will get plenty of chances to handle the ball also.
Keyshawn Johnson was probably the happiest man on the team when the Buccaneers landed their starting quarterback. Johnson's production, 71 catches for 874 yards and eight touchdowns, was not where he had hoped it would be in his first season with the Bucs, but with a more consistent passer getting the ball to him, his numbers are almost guaranteed to increase.
The Buccaneers' defense has been among the best in the league the last couple season's, but this group might be their best ever. They lost defensive end Chidi Ahanotu to the St. Louis Rams, but they picked up a great pass rusher in Simeon Rice. Marcus Jones will move to the left end vacated by Ahanotu and Rice will start at right end. Opposing quarterbacks will not be safe against this front four this year!
If a defender does manage to get past the first line of defense, they probably won't get far because this defense is solid from the line, through the linebackers, and into the secondary. Linebacker Derrick Brooks is one of the leaders of this defense, and safety John Lynch is one of the hardest hitters in the league.
Overview
This is a team with all the pieces in place! They brought in their veteran quarterback, signed a big-time pass rusher, and even drafted a great offensive lineman. Every hole has been filled and on paper, these guys look like they can't miss.
The expectations are very high in Tampa Bay, but along with those expectations comes a lot of pressure, as they found out last year. If the Bucs get off to a slow start, or the offense continues to sputter, then things will start to get really hot for Tony Dungy and crew down in Florida.
