| Giants Set to Defend NFC Title | |
Dateline: September 4, 2001
|
The biggest concern going into the season is on the offensive line. The Giants have a solid starting line, but they must keep their aging veterans healthy because there is not a lot of experience on the bench.
Second-year running back Ron Dayne has slimmed down to 245 pounds after struggling during the second half of his rookie campaign, but Tiki Barber will probably get the majority of the carries. Barber just did crack the 1,000 yard mark in rushing last season and he caught 70 passes out of the backfield.
Quarterback Kerry Collins had a big season last year and must repeat, if not improve upon, his performance. He has looked sharp in the preseason, which is a great sign for the Giants, but like many other positions on this team, if the starter goes down there will be big problems somewhere along the line. If Collins is lost for any significant time, Jason Garrett will take over and the Giants might as well kiss the season goodbye.
The defense is the strength of the team, and the line could possibly be the best in the NFL. Michael Strahan and Keith Hamilton have returned, and second-year tackle Cornelius Griffin has moved into a starting slot. Defensive end Kenny Holmes was lured away from the Tennessee Titans and will take over for Cedric Jones. The linebacking corps remains very solid, and the secondary was beefed up with the addition of first-round draft pick Will Allen.
Overview
On the surface, the Giants are a very good team, and a fantastic defense. Unfortunately, if that surface gets scratched there may not be enough quality depth to cover the blemish.
Collins and his offensive linemen could be the key to the entire season. If these guys stay healthy, they could put together another good season. But if one or two of these key players is lost, their playoff hopes may be too!.
