The 2002 NFL season got off to a furious start, with a number of games producing exciting conclusions. There were overtime thrills, last minute comebacks, surprising upsets, all kicked off by a stirring concert in New York City to honor those killed in the terrorist attacks last September 11th.

Thursday Night
San Francisco 16
NY Giants 13

The Giants and 49ers opened the season with the patriotic tribute, and ended the game in exciting fashion as Jose Cortez's 36-yard field goal with six seconds to play gave San Francisco the victory. Both teams struggled to get their offenses going early in the game, before heating up in the second half.

Said San Francisco coach Steve Mariucci, "It took us the whole game to get going, but we won. Can you call this game ugly? I guess you could say that."

NY Jets 37
Buffalo 31

Drew Bledsoe forced overtime by hitting Eric Moulds with a 29-yard TD pass with 26 seconds remaining in regulation, before Chad Morton ran back the extra period's opening kickoff 96 yards to end the game.

Minnesota 23
Chicago 27

Mike Brown, who returned overtime interceptions twice for game-winning touchdowns last season, made a game-turning interception for the Bears as the Vikings were trying to protect a three-point lead late in the game. Jim Miller connected with David Terrell for a nine-yard touchdown to take the lead with 28 seconds remaining, and Roosevelt Colvin sealed the win by forcing a Daunte Cullpepper fumble on the ensuing drive.

San Diego 34
Cincinnati 6

Drew Brees was 15-of-19 for 160 yards and two touchdowns, and Ladainian Tomlinson rushed for 114 yards on 21 carries as the Chargers thoroughly dominated the Bengals in Cincinnati.

Kansas City 40
Cleveland 39

This contest ended in bizarre fashion, as Cleveland's Dwayne Rudd, thinking he had sacked Kansas City's Trent Green as time ran out, took off his helmet and threw it in celebration. He didn't realize Green had flipped the ball to offensive tackle John Tait and was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, setting up a 30-yard Morten Andersen field goal with no time on the clock.

Atlanta 34
Green Bay 37

After the Packers scored a go-ahead touchdown with 1:10 remaining in regulation, Michael Vick quickly led the Falcons down the field and Jay Feely kicked a 52-yard field goal with five seconds left to send the game into overtime. But Ryan Longwell's 34-yard field goal with 5:15 left in overtime gave Green Bay the victory.

Philadelphia 24
Tennessee 27

Eddie George scored on a 2-yard run with 3:09 remaining as the Titans rallied past the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. On the Eagle's last possession, rookie Carlos Hall sacked McNabb for the third time, knocking the ball loose and Titans end Kevin Carter recovered it to preserve the win.

Detroit 21
Miami 49

Ricky Williams and the Miami Dolphins pounded the hapless Lions to earn their 11th consecutive opening-day victory. Williams rushed for 111 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns and quarterback Jay Fiedler added three touchdown passes. Az Hakim had a nice debut with the Rams, pulling in nine receptions for 97 yards.

Arizona 23
Washington 31

Steve Spurrier and his heralded offense made a nice debut against the Cardinals, and they suddenly find themselves with an early one-game lead in the NFC East. Shane Matthews passed for 327 yards and three touchdowns, and Stephen Davis proved he could be effective in this offense as he produced two touchdowns and 150 yards of total offense.

Baltimore 7
Carolina 10

The Carolina Panthers snapped a 15-game losing streak in one of the day's more forgettable games.

Indianapolis 28
Jacksonville 25

Payton Manning threw three touchdown passes as the Colts picked up their first victory in the new NFC South. Edgerrin James showed no lasting effects from the knee injury that sidelined him last season, rushing for 99 yards on 26 carries.

New Orleans 26
Tampa Bay 20

A desperation pass from his own endzone in overtime by Tampa Bay punter Tom Tupa sailed into the hands of rookie linebacker James Allen, ruining head coach Jon Gruden's debut in Tampa Bay.

Seattle 17
Oakland 31

Rich Gannon completed 19 of 28 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns, and Charlie Garner added 191 total yards and two touchdowns.

St. Louis 16
Denver 23

Kurt Warner passed for 315 yards and Marshall Faulk ran for 91, but it wasn't enough to hold off the Broncos. Mike Shanahan considered pulling Brian Griese from the game in the third quarter, but changed his mind when Rams' kicker Jeff Wilkins missed a field goal attempt. Griese responded by hitting Ed McCaffrey for a 23-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Dallas 10
Houston 19

The Houston Texans pulled a big upset and earned Texas bragging rights by knocking off the Dallas Cowboys in their franchise debut. The Cowboys' second-year quarterback Quincy Carter didn't complete a pass until the second quarter, and his passes hit the defensive backs as often as they hit his own receivers. Had Aaron Glenn been able to hold onto the ball Sunday, he might have come away with as many as four interceptions.

Monday Night
Pittsburgh 30
New England 14
