NFL Recap: Week 2
Chicago at Tampa Bay
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers showed why they are the favorite in the NFC Central when they totally dominated the Chicago Bears, 41-0. Chicago sealed its own fate by committing four turnovers in the first half and Donnie Abraham led the way for the Bucs defense by intercepting two passes to set up 10 points, and forced a fumble that Ronde Barber returned 24 yards for a touchdown. The Buccaneers also sacked Chicago quarterback Cade McNown five times.
Cleveland at Cincinnati
Tim Couch put the game away with a five-yard touchdown pass to Marc Edwards with 11:47 left that put the Cleveland Browns up, 24-7. Couch completed 19-of-31 pass attempts while his counterpart for the Bengals, Akili Smith, spent the day running for his life. Smith threw two interceptions and was sacked by the Browns defense seven times.
Green Bay at Buffalo
Quarterback Rob Johnson completed 18-of-26 passes for 259 yards, leading the Buffalo Bills to a 27-18 win over the Green Bay Packers. Bills' wide receiver Eric Moulds hauled in seven passes for 103 yards. Brett Favre completed his first 14 passes and finished 25-for-35 for 269 yards and two touchdowns, but it was not enough to beat the Bills. The Packers opened the season 0-2 for the first time since 1992 and the Bills opened the season 2-0 for the first time since 1996.
Jacksonville at Baltimore
Jaguars' wide receiver Jimmy Smith had an incredible 291 yards receiving and three touchdowns on 15 receptions, but it was not enough to hold off a fantastic comeback by the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens trailed 17-0 in the first quarter and 23-6 at halftime, but they stormed back in the second half to knock off the Jaguars, 39-36. Tony Banks led the way for the Ravens with a career-high five touchdown passes.
Kansas City at Tennessee
The Tennessee Titans remained unbeaten at Adelphia Coliseum, but it took overtime for them to do it. Neil O'Donnel, filling in for the injured Steve McNair, hit wide receiver Yancy Thigpen for a last-minute touchdown that tied the game, then Al Del Greco hit a field goal in overtime to give the Titans the victory, 17-14. The Titans also used a little trickery in the second quarter when tight end Frank Wycheck took a lateral from McNair and threw a touchdown pass to Kevin Dyson in a play that was reminiscent of last year's Music City Miracle.
New York Giants at Philadelphia
Duce Staley, coming off a spectacular performance against the Dallas Cowboys, was anything but spectacular against the New York Giants' defense. Duce managed only 11 yards on the ground on seven carries, with only four yards in the first half. Giants' quarterback Kerry Collins was 21-for-29 throwing the ball, and running backs Tiki Barber and Ron Dayne combined for 146 yards on 32 carries. The Giants are 2-0 for the first time since 1994. Final score: Giants 33 Eagles 18.
Oakland at Indianapolis
Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning was 33-for-48 for 367 yards, but managed to complete just 8-of-18 for 129 yards in the second half, as the Oakland Raiders came back from a 21-point deficit to defeat the Colts, 38-31. Quarterback Rich Gannon rushed for three touchdowns and Tyrone Wheatley rushed for two for the Raiders, who scored 24 points in the third quarter. The three rushing touchdowns by Gannon is a Raiders' record for quarterbacks.
Miami at Minnesota
Minnesota quarterback Daunte Culpepper threw three interceptions against the Dolphins' defense, but hit Randy Moss on a 15-yard scoring play in the fourth quarter that put the Vikings ahead, 13-0. Jay Fiedler's 2-yard touchdown pass to Thurman Thomas with 1:02 remaining made the score 13-7, but that was as close as Miami would get. Culpepper was 23-37 for 355 yards, and Cris Carter pulled in nine passes for a career-high 168 yards.
Atlanta at Denver
The Denver Broncos scored on their first five possessions against the Atlanta Falcons to jump out to a 34-7 halftime lead. Rookie running back Mike Anderson filled in nicely for the injured Terrell Davis and Olandis Gary with 131 yards on 31 carries. Quarterback Brian Griese completed 20-of-33 passes for 268 yards and three touchdowns as the Broncos routed the Falcons, 42-14.
Carolina at San Francisco
Steve Beuerlein passed for 364 yards and three touchdowns as the Panthers knocked off the 49ers, 38-22. Carolina jumped out to a 28-0 first half lead and was never really challenged by the 49ers. Carolina wide receivers Hayes, Muhammed and Walls combined for 19 receptions and 322 yards with three touchdowns. San Francisco dropped to 0-2 for the first time since 1982.
New Orleans at San Diego
New Orleans quarterback Jeff Blake hit wide receiver Joe Horn for a touchdown with 47 seconds remaining to give the Saints a 28-27 victory over the San Diego Chargers. Blake was 8-for-9 on the game-winning drive which covered 90 yards on 10 plays. San Diego quarterback Ryan Leaf continued to struggle, completing only 12-of-24 passes for 134 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions.
St.Louis at Seattle
Kurt Warner completed a 41-yard pass to Torry Holt to set up a 27-yard field goal by Jeff Wilkins with 23 seconds left to give the Rams a 37-34 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. After the Seahawks tied the game with 2:05 remaining, Warner drove the Rams 61 yards in eight plays for the game-winning score. Warner completed 35-of-47 passes for 386 yards with one touchdown and one interception while Seattle quarterback John Kitna was 20-for-31 for 245 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.
Washington at Detroit
Jason Hanson kicked five field goals to help the Detroit Lions to a 15-10 upset victory over the highly-touted Washington Redskins. Brad Johnson struggled against the Lions' defense, throwing four interceptions, three of which came in the final quarter. The Lions were also aided on the drive for their final score by key penalties on Deion Sanders and Bruce Smith. After a sub-par performance at cornerback, Deion announced, "This is the worst I've ever played in my 12-year career. I don't remember being this bad."
Dallas at Arizona
Arizona quarterback Jake Plummer directed the 12th fourth-quarter comeback of his career when he hit wide receiver Frank Sanders with a 17-yard touchdown to put the Cardinals ahead, 32-31 with 1:54 left in the game. The Cowboys' final attempt to take the lead back failed when Randall Cunningham misfired on his last four attempts. Cunningham completed his first 13 passes of the game, but was only 11-of-21 the rest of the way.
New England at New York Jets
Vinny Testaverde led the Jets on a comeback by driving New York 72 yards on two plays to give the Jets a 20-19 victory. Vinny hit Dedric Ward for 25 yards and a spectacular one-handed catch on the first play and then hit Wayne Chrebet for 28 yards and the game-winning touchdown. Vinny was less than spectacular on the night completing 16-of-36 passes for 281 yards while Drew Bledsoe was 25-of-43 for 239 yards. Ward led all receivers with 100 yards on four receptions.
