Greatest NFL Teams

1985 Chicago Bears

By James Alder, About.com

The 49er's highly praised offensive machine was totally abused by the Bears' defense. Even the great Joe Montana seemed a little shell shocked after taking seven sacks and running for his life all game long. The final score was 26-10 in favor of the Bears, but the game was never really that close. As the outcome of the game became apparent and the Bears attempted to run out the clock, Mike Ditka made a move that put a real twist on a team that was already considered to be a little strange. Ditka put 350 pound defensive tackle William Perry in at running back and actually let him carry the ball on two consecutive plays. Little did Ditka, Perry or the Bears realize what national exposure "Da Fridge" would get or what a cult following he would develop in the following weeks.

The next three weeks saw the Bears knock off the Green Bay Packers two times and the Minnesota Vikings once. In the first Green Bay game William Perry scored the first rushing touchdown of his career. Perry also blocked for Walter Payton's touchdown run, a play that George Cumby may never forget, or then again he may have not remembered it to begin with. As Cumby tried to fill a gap in the defensive line he was met by Perry's 350 pound frame running full steam ahead clearing the way for Payton. As I recall, Cumby ended up about two yards past the end line in the end zone. Somehow he did manage to walk off the field.

Chicago seemed to be at a peak for games 10, 11 and 12. Their opponents, Detroit, Dallas, and Atlanta were completely dominated and outclassed in every facet of the game. The Bears outscored the trio by a total of 104-3. Never at any point in any of these three games were the Bears' opponents in a position to concern the Bears or their fans.

In the game against Dallas, the Bears were able to clinch their division title earlier than any team before them. The game was to be a true measuring stick for the Bears since they had to go into Dallas to face a good Cowboy team, but before the first quarter was over it was apparent that Dallas was no match for the Bears. Chicago destroyed Dallas 44-0 in the Cowboys' worst loss ever, then did the same to Atlanta the next week 36-0.

The Bears were sitting on top of the NFL with a 12-0 record.

Ironically, the Bears would get knocked off in week thirteen by the team whose undefeated record they were trying to duplicate. The Miami Dolphins, filled with a little extra incentive in trying to preserve their own team's record, were ready for the Bears' blitzing defense. And the bounces that seemed to go Chicago's way earlier in the season all went Miami's way on this particular day. Some teams' confidence may have been shaken slightly at this time, but not the Bears'.

Shortly after the loss to Miami, the Bears' players released a song called "The Super Bowl Shuffle". An anthom to the rest of the league that the Bears believed they were the best and nobody was going to get in the way of their Super Bowl bound train.

The Bears easily finished off their last three opponents to take a 15-1 record and home-field advantage into the playoffs. Jim McMahon provided the distractions with a running fued with commissioner Pete Rozelle over McMahon's headbands. McMahon also was reported to have "mooned" a press helicopter that was circling over the Bears practice facilities before the Super Bowl. But even with these distractions the Bears had an easy time picking apart the New York Giants by a score of 21-0. In their second playoff game, the Bears destroyed the Los Angeles Rams and Eric Dickerson by a score of 24-0, recording back-to-back shutouts going in to the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl XX was not much different for the Bears than the rest of the playoffs except that the New England Patriots did actually score, and even led early in the game. But the Bears were not to be denied as they completely dominated the game and handed the Patriots the worst loss ever in a Super Bowl, 46-10. The Chicago Bears were Super Bowl champions to the delight of all of their fans, and the team had earned the claim as one of the best teams in NFL history.
