1. San Francisco – Alex Smith, QB Utah
They really don’t want the pick, but due to the lack of any one standout player, they take what they hope is their QB of the future. Aaron Rodgers is also an option but they are weary of taking a Jeff Tedford QB.

2. Miami – Ronnie Brown, RB Auburn
The Dolphins take a player who has really solidified himself as a top pick with his combine workout and he fills their greatest need. As a bonus, he has neither the name Williams or played at Texas like the other two top RBs.

3. Cleveland – Derrick Johnson, LB Texas
Although QB is a need for the Browns, Romeo Crennel knows that you don’t need to take one in the first round for them to be great after watching Tom Brady for four years. But he also realizes that the linebackers were the strength of the Pats defense and makes a move to help recreate that D in Cleveland.

4. Chicago - Braylon Edwards, WR Michigan
Wide Receiver is still the biggest area of need for the Bears, even after the signing of Muhammed. Plus Mushin isn’t exactly a young guy. They may shy away due to how David Terrell panned out for them, but Braylon is a better receiver than Terrell was and Lovie gives Grossman some more help.

5. Tampa Bay – Mike Williams, WR USC
With the cap problems the Bucs are in, and the fact that they have so few wide receivers under contract that can be called upon to actually perform well when asked to start. Chucky takes Mike to be the new Keyshawn to Clayton’s McCardell. Running back is a need, but a quality back can be found in the second or third round.

6. Tennessee – Adam Jones, CB West Virginia
When they released Samari Rolle, they created a big hole in the defensive backfield and will call upon Pacman to try and fill it. Wide receiver is also a need, but with Edwards and Williams both gone, none are worthy of the No. 6 pick.

7. Vikings (from Oakland) – Shawne Merriman, DE/OLB Maryland
With the signing of Travis Taylor at wide receiver, it looks like their offence is still solid even with the loss of Moss. This means they can use both first round picks on upgrading their defense, which has been a real weakness for years. After the signing of Pat Williams at defensive tackle, they start their draft with Merriman, who can help them at either defensive end or outside linebacker, giving them some freedom with defensive packages.

8. Arizona – Carnell Williams, RB Auburn
If/when Green signs Brad Johnson to be the QB for the near future, it gives him a chance to grab a franchise back in the first and look for a quarterback in the later rounds. Denny may also look at Antrel Rolle.
