2006 NFL Award Predictions

Awards, Breakthroughs and Busts

By James Alder, About.com

Sep 7 2006
With the division and playoff predictions in the book, and the Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins getting the NFL‘s regular season underway, I thought I’d take a stab at picking the individual awards, breakthroughs, and busts.

Offensive Player of the Year - Carson Palmer, QB Cincinnati
If he can stay healthy, Palmer should lead the Bengals deep into the playoffs.

Defensive Player of the Year - Brian Urlacher, MLB Chicago
His ability to cover so much ground in the middle is key to the success of the Bears’ defense.

Offensive Rookie of the Year - Mike Bell, RB Denver
Here’s a guy that was on virtually no one’s radar during the draft, but he’s starting in a system that routinely produces great backs.

Defensive Rookie of the Year - Tamba Hali, DE Kansas City
Hali didn’t put up great numbers at the combine, but he spent a lot of the preseason in the opposition’s backfield.

Coach of the Year - Nick Saban, Miami
Saban’s Dolphins made a dramatic turnaround over the second half of the ‘05 season, and should take the next step with a playoff appearance this season.

Breakout Team - Philadelphia Eagles
Injuries and controversy tore this team apart last year. For now, both seem to have eased considerably and McNabb has a huge chip on his shoulder.

Bust Team - Pittsburgh Steelers
Don’t get me wrong… I think the Steelers will be a quality team this year. But in a tough AFC, I see them missing the playoffs (something they were in danger of at one point last year), which for a team defending its title, is massively disappointing.

Breakout Player - Greg Jennings, WR Green Bay
This kid has looked great since taking the field in training camp. And with Favre throwing the ball, he should get plenty of opportunities to showcase his talents.

Free Agent Bust - Charles Woodson, CB Green Bay
The Packers win one with Jennings and lose one with Woodson, who really has never lived up to expectations following his rookie season. Green Bay paid too much for his inconsistency.

Most Successful New Head Coach - Herman Edwards, Kansas City
Of all the teams with new head coaches, the Chiefs have the most pieces in place to get the job done.
