About Football's NFL Observations - Week 4

By James Alder, About.com

I doubt anyone is surprised that the Philadelphia Eagles moved to a perfect 4-0 by beating an inferior and beat up Chicago Bears team, but what about the Atlanta Falcons, who have matched them win for win? Michael Vick hasn’t put up huge numbers in the team’s new West Coast system, but is there any denying how much this guy means to this team? The Falcons have won seven of their last eight regular-season games with Vick running the offense, after winning just two of their previous 12 contests while their star quarterback was sidelined by injury.

I know... All the critics like to point out that his quarterbacking skills pale in comparison to those of the league’s top signal callers, But he adds a dimension to the offense that is hard to defend, and he makes players around him better. But most importantly, he simply wins games.

We can all sleep easier now knowing that David Carr can finally get his hair cut. The third-year signal caller vowed he would not cut his hair until his Houston Texans won back-to-back games, and the team’s win over the Raiders on Sunday achieved that goal. So now that the young QB is free to return to the clean-cut look of his rookie season, let’s hope he doesn’t develop a Sampson-like reaction to the loss of his locks.

Worst kept secret in the NFL? The San Francisco 49ers are really bad. After four weeks, they have yet to win a game, but the last two are particularly disturbing. After being shut out in Seattle in week three, the 49ers failed to score until the fourth quarter at home against the St. Louis Rams. It’s almost painful seeing how this team, once synonymous with scoring, has quickly evolved into one of the least potent in the NFL.

The New England Patriots tied several teams with their 18th-straight win and will get a chance to establish a new mark at home against the Miami Dolphins next weekend.

After four weeks, the San Diego Chargers have put more points on the scoreboard than all other teams not called the Colts or Eagles.
