Observations of NFL Week 3

The Indianapolis Colts and Green Bay Packers added fireworks to Sunday's action with an explosive start, which included 412 yards of total offense and 35 points scored... in the first quarter alone. Colts quarterback Peyton Manning tossed four touchdown passes in the first 17 minutes of the contest, but inexplicably, the Packers continued to put eight men in the box as Peyton Manning continued to burn their secondary over and over.

Fortunately for the game's statistician, the Packers played more nickel and dime formations in the second half and slowed the Colts juggernaut, but it was too little, too late as Green bay fell, 45-31.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have won their first three games while scoring just 35 totals points and allowing less than 10 points per contest.

Do you think anyone in St. Louis has noticed that Kurt Warner is 2-1 as the starter for the New York Giants?

Chicago Bears running back Thomas Jones appears to be shedding the label of bust with another solid performance in a losing effort in Minnesota. With 110 yards rushing and 71 yards receiving, the former first-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals has 445 totals yards in the Bears first three games.

From the how-far-can-you-fall file, the Kansas City Chiefs dropped to 0-3 with a loss to the previously-winless Houston Texans at Arrowhead Stadium.

As expected, the Cincinnati Bengals just didn't have the personnel to physically match up with the Baltimore Ravens running attack, which featured a 186-yard performance by Jamal Lewis.

Isn't it interesting that all the pundits that were poo-pooing Emmitt Smith's opening-day performance have been silent about the future Hall of Famer's anemic performance in weeks two and three? After putting up just 31 yards on 13 carries (2.4 ypc) against the World Champion New England Patriots in week two, Smith followed it up with a 17-carry, 39-yard performance (2.3 ypc) against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

The Detroit Lions were brought back to reality a little bit with a 30-13 pasting by the Phladelphia Eagles, but rookie wide receiver Roy Williams continued to look like the real deal with nine receptions for 135 yards and two touchdowns Sunday, and has probably established himself as the early front-runner for Offensive Rookie of the Year. As a side note, Terrell Owens has already equaled the touchdown total (5) of all of the Eagles wide receivers in 2003.

Filling in for New Orleans Saints starting running back Deuce McAllister, Aaron Stecker had his first career 100-yard day and Aaron Brooks led the game-winning drive that ended the Rams' 15-game regular-season winning streak at home.

The Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers played exactly as their records would reflect... 3-0 and 0-3 respectively as the Niners were shut out for the first time since 1977. The glory days are officially over in San Francisco.

The Denver Broncos knocked off the division rival San Diego Chargers, as expected, but the way they did it was not exactly as they had anticipated. The Broncos generally bring a potent running game to the table, but on this particular Sunday, Garrison Hearst led the way with a whopping 13 yards. Quentin Griffin was very effective in the season opener, but against the Chargers he recorded just seven yards on 12 carries. Had he just fallen down on each play, he would have probably tripled his output.
