NFL Draft Review - Grading the 2004 NFL Draft

Team Grades for the 2004 NFL Draft

By James Alder, About.com

14. Houston Texans
Grade: C +

For the Texans, the draft was productive early, but they might as well have stayed home on day two. With a pair of first-rounders, the team picked up starting cornerback Dunta Robinson and backup defensive end Jason Babin. Their best value of the day, however, may have come in round four with the selection of Notre Dame safety Glenn Earl.

The team had three picks each in the sixth and seventh rounds, but the only one who stuck with the team was backup linebacker Charlie Anderson out of Mississippi.

15. San Francisco
Grade C +

Had the 49ers done anything worthwhile with their first-round pick, they would have graded out at least a full grade higher, but Rashaun Woods proved to be a horrible pick at No. 31 overall. He had all of seven catches during his career -- all during his rookie season -- and by 2006 had joined the ranks of NFL Europe.

The team turned things around in a big way during the second round, acquiring Alabama guard Justin Smiley and Pittsburgh cornerback Shawntae Spencer, both of whom have developed into quality starters. Unfortuantely, San Francisco ended the first day the same way they began it; by picking a wide receiver who didn’t come close to panning out. Clemson’s Derrick Hamilton was taken with the 77th pick, but never caught a pass in the NFL, and was waived prior to the 2006 season.

Day two was relatively productive as well with the addition of defensive lineman Isaac Sopoaga in the fourth round, and both punter Andy Lee and safety Keith Lewis in the sixth round.
