Coming up short in the previous season's AFC championship game must have inspired Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, because he put together, in 2004, a season for the ages. The team itself cruised to another 12-4 record and a division championship, but the way Manning picked apart defenses and tossed touchdown passes seemingly at will was simply amazing.

Throwing for a career high 4,557 yards, Manning was nearly unstoppable. And his unbelievable 49 touchdown passes set an NFL mark that was held previously by the legendary Dan Marino. Three times Manning passed for five touchdowns in a game, and once he threw for six. He also reduced his interception total to just 10, and posted a gaudy 121.1 passer rating (another career high) for the season.

Along with such a monumental season generally comes multiple accolades, and Manning received his share. For the second year in a row, he was named league MVP -- this time as the sole honoree -- and the Bert Bell Award winner. He was also named the Offensive Player of the Year, and went on to win MVP honors for a brilliant performance in limited action at the Pro Bowl as well.
