Taylor Mays

An illustrated profile of 2009 NFL Draft prospect Taylor Mays

By James Alder, About.com Guide

At 6-3 and 230 pounds, USC safety Taylor Mays has fantastic size, strength, and athleticism to go along with tremendous speed. He's a vicious hitting physical safety with outstanding coverage skills who plays well in both man and zone coverage. He also does a great job supporting against the run.

Built like a linebacker, Mays is in fantastic shape with a chiseled physique. He's very durable and plays through pain which has led to him not missing a game since taking over as the starter as a freshman.

On the downside, he does struggle with his fundamentals, takes bad angles at times, and doesn't have the most fluid hips. He also has a habit of going for the knockout punch at times instead of wrapping up his opponent. He hasn't created as many impact plays as scouts would like out of top-rated prospect like Mays, but some of that can be blamed on the way he played so far off the line at USC.

Mays could probably play either safety position or cornerback in the NFL.
