Ryan Williams Measurables:

Position: Running Back
School: Virginia Tech
Year: Third-Year Sophomore
Height: 5-10
Weight: 210
40-Yard Dash: 4.50

Strengths:

  • Good size, speed, and athleticism
  • Excellent vision and burst through the line
  • Fluid athlete with good change-of-direction skills
  • Compact runner with a low center of gravity and good balance
  • Has the strength to break tackles and bounce off defenders
  • Has the power to run over defenders and the elusiveness to make them miss in the open field
  • Good receiving skills

Weaknesses:

  • Doesn't always keep the ball tucked in tight to his body
  • Had just one big season at the collegiate level

Bottom Line on Ryan Williams:

After a tremendous redshirt freshman season in which he rushed for 1,655 yards and 21 touchdowns, Ryan Williams missed several games in his follow-up year, 2010, and saw his touches reduced significantly. He should still be considered an outstanding prospect, though, and should draw some attention as an every-down back if he decides to leave school for the 2011 NFL draft. He might, however, benefit from another year at Virginia Tech, so he can again display his abilities as the feature back.

Projection: If Williams declares for this year's NFL Draft, he certainly has the potential to be a first-round pick. But he could slip into the second round amid concerns that he was a one-year wonder.
