Super Bowl XLIV Recap

With two of the more prolific offenses in the history of the NFL facing off in Super Bowl XLIV, this contest was expected to be a shootout of epic proportions. So it would figure that for much of the first half the contest was more of a defensive struggle than anything. It would also figure that a huge defensive play would ultimately prove to be the deciding factor in the New Orleans Saints 31-17 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

With the Colts trailing by a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, the game hanging in the balance, and Peyton Manning driving his offense toward a potential tying score, Saints corner back Tracey Porter stepped in front of an ill-advised Manning pass and returned it 74 yards for a touchdown, pretty much sealing the first NFL championship for the long-suffering franchise.

The game got off to a bit of a grinding start with both teams struggling to put points on the board or to really establish any sort of momentum. Until, that is, perhaps the gutsiest move of the game. Trailing 10-6, Saints head coach Sean Payton ordered an onside kick to open the second half, and it seemed to catch the Colts off guard. After a frenzied scramble and several minutes of sorting through the resulting pile, safety Chris Reis emerged with the football for New Orleans.

The surprising turn of events seemed to light a fire under the Saints offense and put the Colts defense on its heels as quarterback Drew Brees, who earned game MVP honors, quickly marched his offense down the field for the go-ahead touchdown, a short pass to the right that running back Pierre Thomas took 16 yards for the score.

Like a veteran prizefighter, however, it didn't take long for the Colts to recover from the unexpected blow, as they took the ensuing kickoff at their own 24 and marched the length of the field to regain the lead on a four-yard Joseph Addai run.

A field goal near the end of the third quarter pulled the Saints to within one point. And then a missed 51-yard field goal attempt by the Colts' Matt Stover left the Saints with excellent field position with just over ten minutes left in the game.

Eight plays later, Brees hit tight end Jeremy Shockey for a two-yard touchdown and the lead. A successful two-point conversion stretched the margin to seven points.

On the ensuing drive, Porter's historic pick sealed the game and the New Orleans Saints first Super Bowl championship ever.
