New England Patriots 2008 NFL Draft Needs

Draft Needs of the New England Patriots

Inside Linebacker — Teddy Bruschi and Junior Seau can't go on forever, so the Patriots need to draft large but quick and fast punishing inside linebacker who can cover. Don't be surprised if they spend a couple picks on the position this year.

Cornerback — If Asante Samuel isn't re-signed, the Patriots will need another franchise-type cover corner to take his place. They may also be in the market for a guy who can help them in the nickel or dime packages.

Outside Linebacker — The Patriots are also showing some age at the outside linebacker position, and could stand to add a young 3-4 hybrid linebacker/defensive end to start grooming for the future.

Running Back — This is not a huge need for the Patriots, but they may choose to draft a future replacement for Kevin Faulk. If Arkansas' Darren McFadden is available when the Patriots pick in the first round, they may not be able to pass on him. Imagine the tandem of McFadden and Maroney alternating at running back. That's a luxury that few teams in the NFL, other than the Patriots, could afford.

Punter - Again, this is not a huge need, especially when you consider how little work the Patriots punter actually gets. It wouldn't be a surprise, however, if the Patriots bring in some competition to try to upgrade the position.

Offensive Tackle — The Patriots have perhaps the best offensive line in football, so this would be a pick strictly for depth at this point.
