2008 San Diego Chargers

AFC West Champions

By James Alder, About.com Guide

It's tough to take a team seriously when they squeak into the playoffs with an 8-8 record that was built in a horrendous division. But, the reality is, the San Diego Chargers could in fact be a team to be concerned about in the postseason. And as the New York Giants proved last year, any team making it to the playoffs has a shot if they get hot at the right time.

The Chargers are a highly talented team that has simply been incredibly inconsistent in 2008. Some of that can be blamed on injury, some on the surprising decline in play on the offensive line, and perhaps some on the coaching. Regardless, if this team gets on a roll -- they did finish the regular season with four straight wins -- they could go deep into the playoffs despite their very mediocre record during the regular season.

To do so, though, they are going to have to beat playoff-caliber teams, which is something they couldn't do during the regular season. They were, in fact, 0-5 in 2008 against teams that made the playoffs.
