Philadelphia Eagles 2004 Season Preview

Fourth Time a Charm? (page 3)

By James Alder, About.com

Overall Evaluation
The addition of Owens and the continued development of Shelton at tight end should help open up the offense and allow McNabb to really showcase his talents. Owens gives him a true No. 1 receiver for the first time in his career, and sliding Pinkston into the No. 2 role will make him more effective.

Gone is the three-headed attack at running back, so the team will have to rely on guys with durability concerns to get the job done. It is not likely they will be able to pound the ball in the running game this season with the group they have this year.

Defensively, they are solid in the front seven, although it could be argued that lack of size at linebacker could be a concern. The Eagles must get pressure on opposing quarterbacks to help out their young corners, therefore, the defensive line must stay healthy this year and Kearse needs to show the pass rushing ability he displayed during his first two years in the league.

This is still a very talented team, but there are a few more questions on defense than in years past. However, they have one of the league’s best coaches in Reid, who should have them ready for another run at a league championship. I expect the Eagles to win the division again this year, although the competition will be a little stiffer than it has been over the last three years.

Prediction
The offense will finally comes together now that McNabb has some weapons to work with, but the defense will be inconsistent at times. An 11-5 record is not unrealistic, and the team still has the talent to make another run deep into the playoffs. However, I’m not sure they still have the defense to get them past the NFC Championship game. Look for another division title and another run deep into the playoffs.
