What was the Falcons’ best/worst move during the offseason?
The Atlanta Falcons didn’t make any blockbuster moves during the offseason, which is probably a good thing since they are more than just a player or two away from being competitive. However, they did bring in a few warm bodies who will plug a few of the many holes on this roster.
The acquisition most likely to pan out for the immediate future is probably that of running back Michael Turner, who served as LaDainian Tomlinson’s back up in San Diego. Turner has shown potential in limited play and could turn out to be a valuable addition to Mike Mularky’s offense, which he hopes will feature a power running game.
On the loss side of the ledger, the Falcons gave up some talent and veteran experience (neither of which they could afford to lose) in RB Warrick Dunn, TE Alge Crumpler, and CB DeAngelo Hall, all of whom will be missed. But the Falcons are committed to starting over, and these guys just weren’t in the rebuilding plan.
What needs to go right for the Falcons to succeed this season?
In a word... everything. The offensive line has been revamped. The quarterback situation is unsettled at best. The new franchise running back has never carried a full load. Ad to that a new head coach who has never been a head coach at any level and you’ve got a lot of transition to deal with.
Where will the Falcons finish the 2008 NFL season?
With the selection of quarterback Matt Ryan with the third overall draft pick back in April, it is apparent the Falcons are in rebuilding mode. And while they would never admit it publicly, this season will be more about gaining experience and building some continuity among the players. The Falcons may very well be the worst team in the league this year, and I don’t think anyone expects them to compete for the playoffs.
Look for the team to turn to Ryan early at quarterback with an eye toward getting him ready to compete in 2009.
Prediction: 2-14 and last in the NFC South.
