The Jags came out strong, and Byron Leftwich would score on a seven-yard QB sneak on 3rd-and-goal. Leftwich completed three crucial passes on third down, including a 22-yard catch by Troy Edwards and a 30-yard catch by Jimmy Smith. Leftwich's scamper marked the first points the Jaguars have scored in the first quarter all season and it was the first time ever under Jack Del Rio that the Jags scored a touchdown on their opening possession.
The teams would trade punts. The Chiefs would strike big with a 52-yard pass from Trent Green to Johnnie Morton on the first play of their second possession, and moments later a Jags penalty would give the Chiefs first-and-goal. The drive quickly stalled three plays later as big Marcus Stroud would drag Green to the ground for a sack, the first of six the Jaguars defense would record on the day. The Chiefs were forced to kick a field goal, and the first quarter would end with the Jaguars leading 7-3.
Less than a minute into the second quarter, the Jaguars would answer right back. This time, Leftwich threw a check down pass to Fred Taylor. Taylor would beat the linebacker covering him around the corner, and then it was off to the races. Taylor would fly down the sideline running by a handful of Chiefs defenders for a 64-yard touchdown. Jacksonville would hold Kansas City for the rest of the half, and took a 14-3 lead into the locker room.
The Chiefs would get the ball to start off the second half, and would move up the field quickly. Within five plays Kansas City was in the red zone. The Jaguars would sack Trent Green for a big loss on second down, leaving the Chiefs with third and very long. Somehow, Tony Gonzalez was left open in the end zone and the Chiefs were back within a possession.
The Jags offense struggled for a majority of the second half. Byron Leftwich was suffering from a minor shoulder injury which occurred in the first half. He didn't seem to be the same after that.
