It's official.
After 16 years of uninterrupted service, Brett Favre is no longer a member of the Green Bay Packers. A deal was struck late Wednesday night that will send the future Hall of Famer to the New York Jets for a conditional draft pick.
The NFL Network is reporting that the Jets will send a conditional fourth-round pick to the Packers for Favre, that in reality will most likely escalate to a second- or third-rounder. Here are the conditions of the deal:
- The Jets gave up a fourth-round draft pick in the 2009 NFL Draft for Favre.
- If Favre takes 50 percent of the snaps this season, the compensation increases to a third rounder.
- The pick increases to a first-rounder if Favre takes 80 percent of the snaps and the Jets make it to the Super Bowl.
- The Packers also added in some protection by increasing the compensation to three first-round picks if the Jets were to turn around and deal Favre back to a team in the NFC North.
If Favre is involved in 70 percent of the plays and the Jets qualify for the playoffs, the Packers will get a second rounder.
Even with Favre on the team, I think it's a stretch to think they will make it to the Super Bowl in a very tough AFC conference. After all, they were a 4-12 team with a lot of holes to fill just a year ago. They were very active in free agency, however, and I don't think a trip to the playoffs is out of the question by any means. And with Favre's history of staying injury free, there's a very good chance he will be on the field for more than 80% of the offensive plays. Thus, this probably turns into a second- or third-round pick for the Packers.
The problem, though, is that while Favre may no longer be on the Packers' roster, they still haven't fullly rid themselves of his presence. New starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers will be subjected to continuous comparisons all season long, as well as a barrage of media attention and endless questions pertaining to his predecessor. And if he can't handle the pressure, which will be immense, things could get real ugly real fast in Green Bay.
