Green Bay Packers 2004 Season Preview

Tweaking in Titletown (page 3)

By James Alder, About.com

On kick returns, bringing down Najeh Davenport is like trying to tackle a bowling ball, so expect him to continue in those duties. The Packers are not as strong at punt return, however, and for now Chatman is penciled into the slot, but he lacks big-play potential and could be replaced . Coverage teams are very solid for the Pack as well.

Overview
Green Bay was able to keep their division champion Packers relatively intact and a couple minor adjustments on defense could be all they need to repeat and possibly make a deeper run into the playoffs this year. Combined with a great running game, one of the best offensive lines in the game, and a three-time MVP at QB, an improved defense would vault the Packers into the league’s elite.

Assuming their problems in the secondary get solved with the return of McKenzie, the Packers appear to be one of the best teams in the league. However, even with the return of their No. 1 corner, the secondary could be a problem if McKenzie’s unhappiness is a distraction and the rookies fail to add quality depth.

The Packers will probably be challenged by the Minnesota Vikings, but I think they still hold a slight edge defensively, which will help them eventually edge out another division title.
