Carolina Panthers

Defending NFC South Champions

The Carolina Panthers were a model of consistency in 2008 as they rolled to a 12-4 record and the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs. They featured a run-first offense with a quarterback who, while not spectacular, generally made few mistakes. Unfortunately, it was Jake Delhomme's uncharacteristic carelessness that led to the Panthers being booted from the playoffs in the first round.

The team overall may not be spectacular in any one area (with the exception of their run game), but they really don't have any major weaknesses either. With the potent one-two punch of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart back at running back, the Panthers likely won't deviate much from their approach in 2009, even though they have dynamic receiver Steve Smith on the outside.

The Panthers also feature what looks like a solid defense on paper, but there are concerns brought on by some early injuries, especially up the middle. And any collapse on defense would probably doom the team's division title hopes.
