College Football Awards Roll In

Thursday December 8, 2005
On Thursday, multiple college football award winners were announced as well as the finalists for this year's Heisman Trophy, which includes just three players this year. Running back Reggie Bush and quarterback Matt Leinart of Southern California, along with Texas quarterback Vince Young, were the only players invited to New York for Saturday's Heisman presentation to the nation's best college football player.

Bush bagged two other awards earlier in the day. First, he was named this year's recipient of the Walter Camp Award, which is awarded annually to the College Football Player of the Year as selected by Division 1-A coaches and sports Information directors. He also was given the Doak Walker Award, becoming the first Southern California player to be honored as the nation's top running back. Just a junior, Bush is expected to make the leap to the NFL a year early, forgoing his final college season.

Young also scored some hardware on Thursday. Known for his mobility as much as his arm, he was named winner of the Davey O'Brien Award, given annually to the nation's outstanding quarterback by the Davey O'Brien Foundation. Young, who seems to be leaning toward going pro, beat out Leinart and Notre Dame standout Brady Quinn.

Ohio State linebacker A.J. Hawk won the Rotary Lombardi Award as the nation's top college lineman or linebacker, marking the fifth time a Buckeyes player has received the award.

Other award winners announced Thursday include:
  • Minnesota center Greg Eslinger won the Outland Trophy on Thursday night as the nation's top lineman.
  • Mike Hass of Oregon State won the Fred Biletnikoff Award as the nation's best receiver.
  • Wake Forest's Ryan Plackemeier won the Ray Guy Award which is given to the nation's top punter.
  • Texas safety Michael Huff won the Thorpe Award as the best defensive back in the country.
  • Oregon State's Alexis Serna won the Groza Award, given annually to the country's best kicker.
  • Penn State linebacker Paul Posluszny won the Chuck Bednarik Trophy given to the best defensive player in the country.
