Don't Take That Knee!

By January 17, 2013

Follow me on:

The most boring play in football is taking a knee. Stopping time. Letting the clock run out. Basically, you're standing around doing nothing and we all watch.

Now, there are obvious situations where you tell your quarterback to take a knee, where it would be stupid to do otherwise. Then there are the times when taking a knee is akin to publicly confessing doubts about your manhood.

Like when you're tied in a playoff game with a chance to reach the Super Bowl, you have 31 seconds and two timeouts left in the game and, oh by the way, you have one of the best quarterbacks in history chomping at the bit to play.

Denver coach John Fox has taken a lot of well-deserved heat for instructing Peyton Manning to run out the clock in the Broncos' playoff game with the Ravens, who went on to win in overtime.

Now, he has John Elway backing him up. The irony here is so thick it's clogging my keyboard. As a player, Elway used every bit of the field and every tick on the clock. But, now that he's a front-office company man, he's towing the company line.

"I think it was the right thing at that time," Elway said at the Broncos season-ending news conference.

Don't think so. I can guarantee you Elway was screaming at the field Sunday: "Get off your knee and go for it, ladies!"

That was the quarterback in him, if he has any left.
