Rankings:

Offense: QB RB FB WR TE OT OG C
Defense: DT NT DE Hybrid DE/OLB OLB ILB FS SS CB
Special Teams: K P RS LS

Derek Sherrod Measurables:

Position: Offensive Tackle
School: Mississippi State
Year: Senior
Height: 6-6
Weight: 305
40-Yard Dash:

Strengths:

  • Has the size and agility to play left tackle
  • Gets off the line quickly and moves his feet well
  • Maintains good balance and knee bend
  • Shown the ability to handle speed rushers
  • Solid run blocker who is aggressive and explodes off the line
  • Good at sealing off defenders to create running lanes
  • Consistently finishes off his blocks
  • Has the speed and agility to pull and get to the outside to lead block
  • Gets to the second level quickly to seal off linebackers

Weaknesses:

  • Has a tendency at times to lunge at defenders
  • Needs to work on using his hands better
  • Would benefit by adding some lower-body strength
  • Lacks the strength to drive block larger defenders on run plays

Bottom Line on Derek Sherrod:

Derek Sherrod seems to be a little underrated, in my view, by many NFL Draft sites. No doubt, however, NFL scouts recognize his all-around abilities and the potential he has to anchor the left side of the offensive line for the next decade. The thing that stands out about him is his athleticism, and that is what is going to make him successful against elite speed rushers in the NFL.

Projection: Sherrod's lack of power may hurt him on draft day, but his potential to play left tackle at a high level in the NFL should ensure his selection in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft.
