That doesn't mean, however, that they are without potential. They've added some high-round talent to the defensive side of the ball over the last couple years, and they did so again in the 2009 NFL Draft with the selection of middle linebacker James Laurinaitis in the second round.
The Rams, of course, used their first-round pick in 2008 on defensive end Chris Long, who should benefit from Spagnuolo's attacking style. And they spent their top pick in 2007 on defensive tackle Adam Carriker.
Spags also strengthened his secondary with a familiar face via free agency in strong safety James Butler, who played for the Giants the last four seasons.
Of course veteran defensive end Leonard Little is still around and should continue to pressure opposing quarterbacks, so this unit isn't completely inexperienced. And if some of these young guys mentioned above play up to their potential, this defensive unit doesn't look half bad on paper.
